Cloudscape Brazil and WCN 2018 Event Report and Proceedings Now Out!

With the conclusion of the 2018 edition of the Cloudscape Brazil and Workshop on Cloud Networks (WCN) held last 25-26 July 2018, the fields of trustworthy cloud computing, 5G, artificial intelligence, internet-of-things, smart cities, and e-health have been enriched with new insights from Europe and Brazil's leading experts in their respective fields, with the publication of the event report and position papers.

Key Outcomes

In the event report, one of the important outcomes of the event that was cited was the creation of a Special Interest Group (SIG) for Cloud Computing within the Brazilian Computing Society.

The new Cloud Computing SIG will focus on enhancing future research cooperation in this area between Brazil and Europe. The next WCN will also be organised by the newly-formed Cloud Computing SIG. Meanwhile, the CSBC has also indicated its willingness to host the next 6th edition of Cloudscape Brazil in Belém in 2019.

More than a hundred participants from academia, policy, and industry gathered. The event saw 13 position papers addressing cloud, 5g networks, IoT, artificial intelligence and more, as well as 12 demos from both industry and research groups and 5 posters

Insightful discussions

From a policy and strategic perspective, the keynotes detailed in the report highlight the challenge of the possible future 5th Coordinated Call between Brazil and Europe where future projects must demonstrate the real impact on society and how they will contribute to the development of the digital economy between both regions.

The individual sessions also highlighted some insights such as the need for proactivity rather than reactiveness in trustworhy cloud computing, the lack of an ehealth strategy in Brazil and Europe that incorporates cloud and IoT in an integrated way, the use of HPC to innovate markets, and the importance of a harmonised strategy for the two markets in research and innovation for cloud computing.

Papers submitted on hottest tech topics

Cloudscape Brazil and WCN 2018 has established itself as a forum for the latest technological developments as papers have been showcased on topics such as 5G networks, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, analytics, internet-of-things (IoT) and more.

However, a common theme arising out of these papers is not only how they work best on their own but how, when combined with each other, they can advance industries and fields they are applied to. Examples include enhancing AI results through analytics in IoT or Artificial Intelligence for scheduling resource blocks in LTE/5G networks.

There were also proposed EU-Brazil common standards for IoT in e-health and sensitive data in cloud environments as well as the exploration of improvements in certain technologies such as improving user privacy in IoT and ensuring fairness and transparency in trustworthy cloud-based analytics services.
