Wim is a researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His laboratory is dedicated to the functional study of genomes of microorganisms important in human health and environment, comparative genomics using bioinformatics tools and wet lab research dedicated to the design and evaluation of new drugs, mostly in the field of neglected diseases, and to the development of products using biotechnology and synthetic biology.
He is also advisor, since 2002, for the Vice-president for Research and Biological Collections, and responsible for management of translational research programs and technological platforms (core facilities) at Fiocruz.
